The Primary column has some powerful and unique functionality to help you organize your work. You can establish Hierarchy with your data, the ability to group and relate rows to each other (Parent & Child). This is particularly useful for gantt charts and where you want to sum up data. You don’t have to use the Primary column – in some instances where you don’t have a hierarchy yopu can leave it blank or use it as  free text field. 

You cannot merge cells in Smartsheet. There are a few workarounds and suggestions on the Smartsheet Community

If the cells are next door to each other, use the following formula =[Cell1] + ” ” + [Cell2]

If the cells are contiguous, you can also use the new JOIN() function.

=JOIN([Column1]23:[Column2]23,”_”) for two cells side by side.
